Do These Four Things If You Want To Raise a Child Who Loves To Read

Children become lifelong readers for various reasons; maybe a teacher suggested books that create a hunger for reading that last a lifetime. However, you can do these four things to raise a child that loves reading to supplement on what they learn at school.

Read Aloud To Them

When you read to a child, you will cultivate in them a reading culture that will stay with them for a lifetime. However, you may have to read their favorite book a hundred times over, but they will not only remember the closeness, but they will also remember the story. You might also try reading to them nonfiction books every so often. Do not stop when they can read on their own since you will be helping them to learn the correct pronunciation and the rhythm of language.

Stick to Physical Books

There magic ebbed in physical books, and it heightens a child’s senses. The feel of the pages, the smell of the glue and the ink, the look of the illustrations, and your sound as you read to them aloud enhances your child’s experience. Using e-books on smartphones and tablets might ingrain the idea of using the device over the virtue of reading.

Make Eye Contact

While you are reading to your child, make eye contact without looking for any particular reaction. It may seem like they are not listening or understanding, but they are aware of the experience. The routine, patterns, and attentive habits gained from the whole reading experience will last a lifetime and are crucial to making a great reader.

Go For Specific Genres and Savor a Series

As children grow, they are bound to prefer certain genres and they will outgrow them over time. However, you can choose a series of books like child detectives, epic tales and more. This will create a hunger for a lifetime to keep reading.
