How Can Parents Help Their Teenage Children Sleep Better?
Teens require more sleep than adults. Children this age are extremely active and this makes them in need of longer rest and quality sleep. Parents can play an important role in encouraging their teens to get enough sleep. If you just let them sleep when they feel like it, they will end up sleep deprived which is not at all good for their health.
There are several effective ways you can send your teen kids to bed for a longer and more quality sleep. However, you need to recognize the fact that teens really go through circadian rhythms shift. This means, they have the natural tendency to go to sleep later at night and wake up late the following morning.
It is a must for parents to keep an eye on their teens' bedtime habits. The teen's room must have a calming atmosphere conducive for sleeping. Teens have to be prevented from drinking coffee or soda before bedtime. They should be encouraged to take a warm bath or drink milk a few hours before going to sleep.
The internet, TV, and their mobile phones are also culprits in preventing quality sleep for teens. You should set a time limit as to when the teens can make use of these devices. You may also ask your teen to wear a sleeping eye cover or eye mask if they are not comfortable sleeping with the lights off.
Requiring your teens to wake up early and sleep at an earlier time is also effective. Once they have become used to going to bed early and waking up at least 8 hours after, their sleeping habits will be healthier.
