How to find your birth parents

How to find your birth parents

If you have been adopted or put into the foster care system, then it is very understandable that you would want to find your birth parents. This can be quite a challenge sometimes but there are some things that you can do if you would like to go on this venture and find out more about your heritage.

One of the first things that you should do is tell your adoptive parents or foster care parents what you are feeling and what you are looking for. They may have the name of your parents and they may not. If your adoptive or foster care parents don’t have the information, you can search within the agency that fostered your adoption. They may have more information for you about your birth parents.

Some States have an ‘adoptee rights’ law. It may be advisable to start there. Find out what your rights are as an adoptee. Most States have a registry for adoptions and open adoptions that you can access or apply for access. You must be over the age of eighteen to apply for the information about your birth parents. Sometimes if you know who your birth parents are then you can simply look for them with an online search. It is also advisable that when you do locate your birth mother or father, you contact them through a mediator. This way you will know whether or not they will welcome being contacted by you and if they want to have a relationship or not. Contacting them bluntly on your own could infringe on their privacy.
