Chickenpox

Varicella or chickenpox is a viral illness. The most known characteristic is a red rash (very itchy). Also, this is one of the most common infectious diseases of childhood. Thanks to the widely use of vaccines in the 90s, this became a very rare disease. Many doctors never had a patient with this disease. Chickenpox is mild in children (in many cases) but it can cause serious complications in adults, including bacterial pneumonia. When a child is infected with chickenpox, he develops a lifetime immunity, which means that this disease cannot infect that person again. But, the virus will stay in a body. It can reactivate later in life. In that case, it will cause shingles.

Chickenpox is dangerous for pregnant women because the virus can pass to her unborn infant. It is known that the virus can cause birth defects. Because of this, many doctors advise that a pregnant woman should confirm her immunity with a blood test. The virus which causes chickenpox is called herpes zoster virus. The other name is varicella zoster virus. It can be spread through droplets form cough or sneeze, or by contact with the bed linens, clothing or blisters of an infected person. The first symptoms may occur 21 days after the exposure.

Because this is a very contagious disease, a child should stay at home, without a contact with children or adults who never had chickenpox. Only when all blisters have crusted and burst over, your child can return to the normal life. The treatment includes an antiviral drug, called acyclovir. It will short the duration of symptoms and it is recommended for pregnant women or people with the weak immune system.
